GeoChallenge is a student competition held as part of the events at GeoCongress, an annual conference for Geotechnical engineers. The competition is similar to other ASCE events, such as steel bridge or concrete canoe. The objective of GeoChallenge is to design the most efficient reinforced wall to support a box filled with sand in addition to a surcharge. The back of the wall is typically poster board and the reinforcements extending into the sand are craft paper. The wall with the lowest factor of safety, meaning the least amount of reinforcement is used, which holds the required weight, is the winner of the competition. There are four members to a team, at least two of which must be undergraduate students.
Geo-Challenge 2010 will be held in West Palm Beach Florida on February 21st.
Information on the 2009 event can be found on the Geo-Institute website at: http://content.geoinstitute.org/student/Geo-Challenge2009.html
